The SI Maylands Peninsula and SI On the Terrace Women in
Prison Project team met recently with Carolyn Lewis, Chair of the Deaths in
Custody Watch Committee WA (DICWC WA). Carolyn told us about Not Just a Canvas.
Not Just a
Canvas is a healing arts project that acknowledges the deaths in custody of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people since the Royal Commission into
Aboriginal Deaths in Custody 25 years ago. Phase 1 of the project focuses on the
more than 100 Aboriginal deaths in custody in Western Australia since the Royal
Commission finished its hearings, with the intention that other states will
follow should this pilot project get up and running.
aims to 'bring life back' and support families who have experienced severe loss
and grief through the unexplained deaths of family members.
member will be given the opportunity to design their own personal canvas that
reflects their loved one. The DICWC WA - Not Just a Canvas project will be a
collective piece of living history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
deaths in custody. This collection will be displayed at appropriate times and
at the request of families.
