Self Defence Course

On Wednesday 6th June Cootamundra local women of all ages attended the combined SI Cootamundra and Kumiai Ryu self defence course.

The class was led by Cootamundra Kumiai Ryu martial arts instructor Andrew Finch. It began with a DVD presentation on the dangers women may face before Andrew took participants through a series of practical exercises they can use if in danger.

He reiterated the best course of action in the event of danger is always to get away from the situation.

Loads of fun for participants, each of the girls in the class partnered up to be taken through their paces learning the very basics of grappling techniques to use a potential attackers weight against them.

Everyone took away some tips on how to look after themselves better. Another evening is being planned for the 12th October.

SI  Cootamundra International Women's Day Dinner

On the 26th March 2014 SI Cootamundra held a dinner to celebrate International Women's Day. The event was held at the Cootamundra Country club with over 60 women in attendance .

Our guest speaker for the night was Hilda Fitzgerald who had volunteered in Rwanda and worked with women and girls as a nurse and midwife. Hilda's informative talk took us to the Democratic Republic of Congo to a village of over 200 women and girls who had been raped by insurgents. They had found sanctuary in this isolated village in the centre of Africa. Hilda travelled to the village by truck, boat and on foot. Hilda spent a number of weeks working with the women in her nursing capacity.

The money raised at the event was able to be gifted to a number of projects including supporting health care workers to provide health care, Medicine for the a MHCD health facility in a village and agricultural supplies for one village to grow their own crops.

Thanks must go to Hilda for her inspiring talk and to the members of SI Cootamundra for their organisation of the event.

We are hoping to conduct another dinner to once again celebrate the wonderful contributions women make to lives each and every day.
