SISWP Delegation SI Board Meeting PDF Print E-mail

President of Soroptimist International of the South West Pacific Theresa Lyford reports on the SISWP Delegation to the SI Board Meeting.

Today was the first day the complete SISWP Delegation was able to sit down and plan our final strategies for the SI Board Meeting which officially starts tonight. As Directors of SI (Soroptimist International) Limited, myself, Carolyn and Anusha attend the SI Board Meeting not as SISWP Directors but as SI Directors who must carry out the roles and responsibilities equivalent to those of a Company Director as defined within the Companies Act 2006 (England and Wales).
So for the next three days Carolyn, Anusha and I, ably supported by our Federation Secretary Sue and our two Consultants, Di Lockwood and Karen Ford, will work hard to ensure that SI (Soroptimist International) Limited continues to work towards achieving its strategic priorities and that we meet the Objects of the Company as defined in the Articles of Association.
We have a large Agenda to cover and in between the scheduled Board Meetings there will be training for the Board as well as a visit to SI HQ in Cambridge to view the current premises.
I hope you all have enjoyed some of the early photos of the delegation as we took a couple of rest days to acclimatise to the weather and time zone changes here in the UK (London and today at Cambridge) through our respective Facebook accounts and other media. Tonight we will meet up with the delegations from the other three Federations for dinner and conversation prior to the first day of Business on Thursday morning at 8:30 am - 8 September 2016.

Soroptimists in the South West Pacific Mark World Refugee Day

“There is hardly a day that goes by without some disturbing report in the media about the refugee crisis in our world,” Soroptimist International South West Pacific President Theresa Lyford said.
“On 20 June, World Refugee Day, it is a timely reminder to highlight this problem and remember what Soroptimists are doing to help those who are facing this human tragedy,” Mrs Lyford said.

“As Soroptimists, we must send a message to our Governments about the need to work together to find a solution to war and violence, and to reinforce our belief that it is unacceptable that people have to flee their homes every day to find a place to live in peace and security.”

Soroptimist International recognises that women and girl refugees, internally displaced persons and asylum seekers experience multiple layers of discrimination, vulnerability, and risk factors.
“Soroptimists in our clubs across the Federation are engaged in improving lives by educating, empowering and enabling women and girls on local, national and international levels,” she said.

“Many of our club members are attempting to help those people affected by the current refugee crisis.”
Soroptimists provide relief by volunteering in refugee centres, giving language lessons, donating medical, sanitary and hygienic supplies, and offering vocational training.

“On World Refugee Day, I would like to thank Soroptimists in our Federation for their efforts to help diminish the effects of this humanitarian disaster,” she said.
“Let us continue to work together in a united effort to put an end to this human tragedy.”
