WALK THE TALK 2015 – “MEN & WOMEN, UNITED TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN”

I am proud to say, SIROM again took a stand against all forms of violence from domestic violence, child abuse and teenage rape to all crimes of violence committed against women and girls on Saturday 5th December 2015 with our Walk The Talk event themed “Men & Women United to Stop Violence Against Women".

SIROM’s WTT was organised in conjunction with UN Declared 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence from 25th November to 10th December 2015.

To recap – In 2012, WTT started in Malaysia at the start of the Federation wide Walk The Talk campaign. Soroptimist International Region of Malaysia showed the way with a 16 day walk by 3 SI members from Sabah who walked 850KM from Arau, Perlis to Johor Bahru and earned recognition in the “Malaysia Book of Record for Longest Walk by Duo” (one of the three walkers did not complete the walk) with public participation in major cities in Malaysia, including Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

In 2013, we sustained the Walk The Talk event with the theme “Zero Tolerance, Zero Violence, Zero Victim”.  This consisted of a symbolic 2KM walk and a talk at Bukit Kiara Equestrian club for about 500 women with the support of Amanita, SIROM members and supporters and the public.  PDRM was again the partner with Body Shop as our main sponsors.

In 2014, SIROM decided to involve men with the theme “Men on Board” and we obtained the endorsement and support of our Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Khairy Jamaluddin and his ministry.  The walk from Taman Jaya ended at University of Malaya where we organised a talk inviting five male speakers on the topic “Violence Against Women – The Men’s Perspective”.

In 2015, SIROM had another very successful WTT with a 3.5KM walk departing from Taman Jaya at 7.30am to walk along Jalan Timur, Jalan Utara, Jalan Barat, Jalan Sultan and back to Taman Jaya again where we had over 600 participants/signups consisting of Soroptimist members and friends in the Klang Valley, corporate company staff, celebrities and the general public.   We were very pleased that PDRM had agreed to be our partner for the 4th year running together with UNDP and the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation.

The walk started off at 7.00am with the arrival of participants and our Soroptimist walkers.  The flash mob by Asia Pacific University students drew good attention to the event with their very energetic performance.  Speeches followed with the welcome address from me, then our Guest of Honour Y.B. Datuk Hajah Azizah Binti Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd. Dun, Deputy Minister of Women Family and Community Development, followed by the flag off line-up  for Walk the Talk 2015 with the undersigned, President, SIROM / Organising Chair SIROM Walk The Talk 2015, Representative of PDRM - Representative from UNDP , Representative from Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation,  Representative from WAO , Representative from AWAM.  From observation, all participants had great fun, chatting whilst mingling, taking photos and at the end of the Walk, when asked if they felt happy, most replied they felt satisfied in being part of such a meaningful campaign.  SIROM’s WTT 2015 ended at approximately 10.30 a.m.

My grateful thanks especially to Puan Sri Siew Yong Gnanalingam, Immediate Past President, SISWP / Adviser SIROM Walk the Talk 2015, Joyce Kee – member SIPJ, Joanne Yeoh and Helena Cheah for their expertise and awesome help with this event.  Thank you too to the other members on the sub-committee and all the members of the various clubs who had taken the time to join in the event together with their friends and relatives.  Without the support of all of you wonderful ladies, WTT 2015 would not have been as successful.  God Bless every one of you!
