Support water connection to Naboutini Community of 80 peoplePrintE-mail

The Nadi club has been liaising with the water authority, the district officers office and the Water authority head office in Suva in order to get a rural displaced community of 80 or more peopel to get access to government water supply.

This communitery of displaced farmers and casual workers plus several elderly and some disabled have been seeking to get water connected to their area since the year 2007. Their efforts have ben in vain and money paid for this seems to have been fraudulently used.

The community has been subject to demands for bribes in the form fo farm animals, meat and even money by bot the water authrity staff who visit the field and the local village heads who have to give approval for the water connection. In the failure of this community to meet these demands on the side, their right to have access to government water has been denied to them.

The Nadi club President is working closely with the water authrity headoffice in Suva and the Fiji Islands Commission Against Corruption to highlight this communities concerns and enable fair and honest support to them in order for them to access this basic human need without intimidation and threat.  Seevral  visits have been mail and mail exchanged in order to get the attention of the authorities to the plight of this community with an assurance by the Government that water will be connected to this community within the next month.

Because the charges for water connection are also high - $300 per household in addition to the water meter fee, the Soroptimsit Nadi club, through its President, has written to the District Officer Nadi to mobilise the Governments rural development fund to support and pay for the fees for water connection for thsi community.
