Soroptimist InternationaI of Sydney Inc Educate to Lead

Over the last twelve months Soroptimist International Sydney has modernized its Education Grants Project . We work with seven schools in the Inner City and Inner West area of Sydney providing grants to assist young school leaders to further their aspirations for the future. On Monday 3rd March seven young women in their final two years of schooling were hosted to a presentation of the grants at NSW Parliament House. The event was hosted by the Honourable Sophie Cotsis MLC, Shadow Minister for Women. In her address to the students Ms Cotsis ac- knowledged that this was a fitting way to commence International Women’s Day week, and commented on the importance for young women to complete their education.

The seven students were accompanied by their school principals, or school advisors and by one or two family members. The one thing all these young women have in common is their dedica- tion to learning and their commitment to serving their community. Their aspirations are diverse. They include the desire to become a musician; and careers in medicine, law, science, mathemat- ics, history and education. Several of the young women have family from different cultural back- grounds. Ms Cotsis was a charming host and at the conclusion of the formalities conducted a short tour of Parliament House for those who could spare the time to participate.

Members of SI Sydney will keep in touch with the students, monitor their progress and provide support where necessary. The students have agreed to provide regular reports on their progress so that they are eligible to receive their second grant at the end of the year. These are not the top students in their year but they are all dedicated to furthering their oppor- tunities and helping their families and community. The students are committed to learning more about Soroptimist International.
