Wewak Soroptimist Club chartered on 16 November 2019 in the ocean-front East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. 33 women with diverse businesses and professions received their charter membership certificates and badges.
The team led by the dynamic Charter President Jill Akara Bosro organised a wonderful reception filled with ceremonial grace, much love and joy, inspiring speeches and hope for the local women and community. Officiated by the Provincial Administrator Dr Clement Malau and the Member of Parliament for Wewak Open, the Honourable Kevin Isifu. The Deputy Governor the Hon. David Kausik was confirmed to attend but had to host an Indonesian delegation at the last minute.
Whilst in Papua New Guinea for the Club Charter of SI Wewak, Federation President Anusha Santhirasthipam accompanied by SWP Papua New Guinea representatives, visited the Boram General Hospital in Wewak to meet hospital administrators, nursing staff and patients at the Maternity Ward to assess support requirements. Also, to identify and assess programmes to support cancer patients and those who suffer from depression and other mental health issues.
A visit to the only All-Girls Secondary School Yarapos in Wewak was an uplifting and memorable time for all. Motivational talks were shared, helping to empower life lessons to the girls aged 13 to 17 years and a meeting with the Minister for Treasury of Papua New Guinea, Honourable Ian Ling-Stuckey, CMG was a great opportunity to discuss macro-economic policies and social capital initiatives, women and youth enterprise development and sustainable development programmes. Promoting Social Public Private Partnerships with government assistance for national projects to be carried out in all districts. We hope to nurture social enterprises to provide jobs and generate income for sustainable, safe and secure communities.
