About ACT and Monaro

We are a group of active women who under our international banner draw on the skills used in our professional lives to address issues of concern for the women and girls of the ACT and Monaro.

 

Some of our Fundraising and Advocacy Achievements

  • Advocating and marshalling support for the ACT Women’s Legal Service by hosting our Rosie Batty Breakfast 
  • Supporting the Louisa Family Violence Service though advocacy and hosting a fundraising wine tasting evening 
  • Partnering with the YWCA to deliver family violence reduction strategies in our local schools 
  • Providing funds from our fundraiser activities for Soroptimist International relief projects in Nepal and Fiji 
  • Providing funds from our fundraiser activities for specific causes that are aligned with Soroptimist goals.In the past year we have donated to the Seven Women project in Nepal, the Tathra Bushfire recovery Fund and the RSPCA for domestic violence related issues
  • Sending needed text books to schools in the Solomon Islands 
  • Holding events to celebrate International Women’s Day each year and using any profits to support the education, enablement or empowerment of girls and young women.
  • Advocating for better management of response to Family Violence in the ACT with local health, police and community services ministers
  • Establishing the Soroptimist Bookclub

Friendship

We are also about establishing and building friendships among our members, their partners and other supporters of our club. We come together socially several times a year for dinners/lunches, drinks, coffee, wine tasting etc.

The Soroptimist Bookclub

Building on its friendship link with SI Strasbourg in France, SI ACT & Monaro started a book club that introduces its members to a range of books that are available in both English and French, and supports discussion in either language that illuminates the lives of women.

The club holds face-to face meetings in Canberra on the second Thursday of every even month.  Using the Goodreads platform, discussion of the books are open to other Soroptimisits and their friends in other coutries and clubs.  If you are interested in contributing to the club or starting your own book club meetings please email siactandmonaro@siswp.org for more information.
